Priestdaddy: A Memoir of a Daughter's Journey from the Church to the World and Back Again

Priestdaddy is a memoir by American poet Patricia Lockwood.[1] It was named one of the 10 best books of 2017 by The New York Times Book Review and was awarded the 2018 Thurber Prize for American Humor.[2] In 2019, the New York Times included the book on its list "The 50 Best Memoirs of the Past 50 Years,"[3] and The Guardian named it one of the 100 best books of the 21st century.[4]

Priestdaddy: A Memoir

Lockwood began writing the book shortly after she and her husband, owing to financial difficulty and illness, moved back to live with her parents in her father's rectory.[5] The 352-page memoir was published May 2, 2017 by the Riverhead imprint of Penguin Random House.[6] In July 2017, Imagine Entertainment announced it had optioned Priestdaddy for development as a limited TV series.[7]

In Priestdaddy, Lockwood recounts her upbringing as the daughter of a married Lutheran minister who converted to Catholicism, becoming one of the few married Catholic priests. The book chronicles her return as an adult to live in her father's rectory and deals with issues of family, belief, belonging, and adulthood. Writing in The Chicago Tribune, Kathleen Rooney described Priestdaddy as "an unsparing yet ultimately affectionate portrait of faith and family."[8] The Guardian called it a "dazzling comic memoir."[9]

Good Things Happen Slowly is [Fred Hersch's] memoir. It's the story of the first openly gay, HIV-positive jazz player; a deep look into the cloistered jazz culture that made such a status both transgressive and ground-breaking; and a profound exploration of how Hersch's two-month-long coma in 2007 led to his creating some of the finest, most direct, and most emotionally compelling music of his career.

The 52 micro-memoirs in genre-defying Heating & Cooling offer bright glimpses into a richly lived life, combining the compression of poetry with the truth-telling of nonfiction into one heartfelt, celebratory book. Ranging from childhood recollections to quirky cultural observations, these micro-memoirs build on one another to arrive at a portrait of Beth Ann Fennelly as a wife, mother, writer, and deeply original observer of life's challenges and joys. Some pieces are wistful, some wry, and many reveal the humor buried in our everyday interactions. Heating & Cooling: 52 Micro-Memoirs shapes a life from unexpectedly illuminating moments, and awakens us to these moments as they appear in the margins of our lives.

Wine is the spine of this touching memoir; the life and character of Fadiman's father, along with her relationship with him and her own less ardent relationship with wine, are the flesh. The Wine Lover's Daughter is a poignant exploration of love, ambition, class, family, and the pleasures of the palate by one of our finest essayists.

Usually publishing a poem is like puking in space, or growing an adolescent moustache--no one really notices, and it might be better that way." These are Patricia Lockwood's words--words she admits do not apply to her own best-known poem, "Rape Joke", which relays the experience of sexual assault by way of the anaphora "The rape joke is ...". Published on the current affairs website The Awl in 2013, it rapidly went viral. Soon afterwards, Lockwood joined Penguin's poetry list. In her latest offering, Priestdaddy: A memoir, she considers in nimble prose how she "dropped from space, dragging ellipses behind me like a comet" in the first place. The "Priestdaddy" in question, her father, is a larger-than-life Lutheran minister turned Catholic priest with the musicianship to "make the guitar stage a filibuster where it reads The Hunt for Red October out loud" and a puzzling proclivity for washing himself with washing-up liquid.

Collabora alla "London Review of Books".

Patricia Lockwood's memoir, Priestdaddy, was one of the NYT Book Review's ten best books of 2017. Her first novel explores life as a social media star. When the unnamed narrator's family emergency demands her attention, she finds herself questioning the value of her extremely online life. 2ff7e9595c
